CastHub at Home vs Aura, Nixplay, Skylight and Frameo Frames

What a frame does better, what a TV-based family setup does better, and what three screens in two homes cost over three years.

A small digital photo frame on a bookshelf beside a large living room TV, both showing the same mountain photograph.

A dedicated frame is the right buy for one small screen on a shelf: it works out of the box, it is the size of a book, and Aura’s needs no subscription at all. CastHub at Home is the right buy when the family wants the big screens it already owns, in several rooms or several homes, showing the same albums and the same calendar, with one person able to manage every screen from a phone. The table below is honest about both.

What a frame does better

It is one object. Unbox it, join it to Wi-Fi, and it shows photos; nobody has to switch an input or find a remote. It fits on a bedside table or a desk, where no TV belongs. Aura asks for no subscription ever. A frame is also the right gift for a relative who would rather not learn anything new. If the need is one screen in one room, buy the frame.

What CastHub at Home does better

Size: the living room TV is five to eight times the width of a frame, and the photo of the newborn fills a wall. Reach: one plan covers up to 6 TVs across every home the family has, and a photo added at the match reaches all of them at once. Breadth: the calendar the family already keeps, the chore chart from Canva, a short clip, in the same album as the photos. Management: from another city, see that Grandma’s TV is on, change what it shows, set quiet hours, restart it, or ask Cass to do any of that in one sentence. A frame cannot be looked at from afar and cannot be fixed from afar.

What three screens in two homes cost over three years

A family with a TV in the living room, one in the kitchen, and one in a grandparent’s house, over three years. Frame prices are each brand’s 10-inch model as checked on 2026-08-26; prices move, so treat them as a guide. CastHub at Home assumes the family already owns the TVs; the Signage Sticks are optional and are what make the TVs switchable from the app.

Read plainly: frames are cheaper for three small screens, by $300 to $750 over three years. CastHub at Home costs more and buys bigger screens, a calendar and documents on them, a sixth and seventh screen at no extra cost, and the ability to run all of it from afar. If none of those four matter to your family, buy the frames.

Using both

Plenty of families do: a frame by the bed or on a desk, CastHub at Home on the TVs. The two do not share albums, so a photo meant for both is added to each. The frame guide compares the frames against each other in detail; CastHub at Home explains the TV side.

Frequently asked questions

Is CastHub at Home cheaper than a photo frame?

For one or two small screens, no. An Aura Carver is $149 with no subscription; CastHub at Home is $299 a year. CastHub at Home costs less per screen than frames once a family wants big screens in several rooms or several homes, and it is the only option of the five that shows a calendar and documents and lets one person manage every screen from afar.

Which frame has no subscription?

Aura. Nixplay, Skylight and Frameo sell the frame and then a yearly plan for the features most families end up wanting: Nixplay Plus $29.99 a year, Skylight Plus $39 a year, Frameo Plus $16.99 a year.

Can grandparents add photos to a frame?

On all four frame brands, yes, by invitation through the vendor’s app or by email. On CastHub at Home too, through the app on their own phone, with the photo reaching every TV the family chose rather than one frame.

Can I use a frame and CastHub at Home together?

Yes. Many families keep a small frame on a bedside table and use CastHub at Home for the living room TV, the kitchen and the grandparents’ den. The two do not share albums, so the same photo is added twice.

What does a TV-based setup need that a frame does not?

A TV with the CastHub app or an Amazon Signage Stick (about $100), Wi-Fi, and the TV switched to the right input. A frame is a single device that works out of the box; that simplicity is the main reason to buy one.
