OEE Production Dashboards for Manufacturing
How OEE is calculated, how the dashboard your MES or SCADA system builds reaches line-side TVs, layouts for multi-line plants, and the hardware.
OEE production dashboards display Overall Equipment Effectiveness as a live composite metric (Availability x Performance x Quality) on screens above each production line. CastHub displays the OEE dashboard the MES (Plex, SAP Digital Manufacturing, Tulip) or SCADA system already publishes, as a web page slide pointing at a public dashboard URL with no login or as an image slide exported on a schedule; no direct MES, SCADA or OPC-UA connection is documented. Operators see units produced vs target, cycle time, current downtime reasons, and shift-level history without leaving their workstation.
A plant operations team can use line-side and supervisor-area screens to push live OEE composite scores, units produced vs target, cycle time deviations, downtime reason codes, and shift-level production history published by Plex, SAP DM, Tulip or the plant SCADA system and shown as a web page slide, replacing trips to the supervisor’s office and reducing the corrective-action lag from minutes to seconds.
What is OEE and how is it calculated?
OEE stands for Overall Equipment Effectiveness, the composite metric that lean manufacturing uses to measure production line performance. The formula is OEE = Availability x Performance x Quality. Availability = run time divided by planned run time. Performance = actual cycle time divided by ideal cycle time. Quality = good units divided by total units. World-class OEE is 85% or higher. Average OEE across most facilities is 60%.
| OEE component | Definition | Typical world-class | Typical average |
|---|---|---|---|
| Availability | Run time / planned run time | 90%+ | 80% |
| Performance | Actual cycle / ideal cycle | 95%+ | 85% |
| Quality | Good units / total units | 99%+ | 90% |
| OEE composite | A x P x Q | 85%+ | 60% |
How do OEE dashboards pull data from MES?
Manufacturing digital signage shows what the MES publishes rather than querying it. Build the board in Power BI, Grafana, a Tableau public view or Looker Studio over the Plex, SAP Digital Manufacturing, Tulip or IQMS/DELMIAworks data, publish it to the web, then paste the sharing link rather than the iframe HTML into a CastHub Web Page slide. The board refreshes on the source cadence, typically hourly in Power BI. CastHub documents no MES connector.
Can SCADA systems push data directly to digital signage?
Not into CastHub. SCADA platforms like Wonderware, Ignition and FactoryTalk expose OPC-UA endpoints to systems on the production network, and CastHub subscribes to none of them. The documented path is to surface the SCADA numbers in a dashboard that is published to the web and point a CastHub Web Page slide at that URL, or to export the view on a schedule and show it as an image slide, which is also the version that keeps playing when a screen loses internet.
What does an OEE dashboard layout look like?
Top half: large OEE percentage, target percentage, and units produced against target. Middle: current downtime reason if active, with elapsed time. Bottom: shift comparison chart or last-8-hours trend. Color coding follows the standard lean convention (green at or above 85%, yellow 60-85%, red below 60%). The layout reads at 8 to 12 feet from the screen, the typical viewing distance from line-side workstations.
How do you display per-line OEE across a multi-line plant?
One screen per line displays that line’s OEE plus a summary screen in the supervisor area showing all lines side-by-side. The centralized CMS pushes the layout template once; each screen shows its own line published dashboard. Per-screen pricing scales linearly here: a 20-line plant runs $160 per month at the Yodeck Basic representative published rate, fetched 2026-09-01. CastHub Enterprise covers up to 25 screens at $95 per month, and the unlimited-screen add-on takes a larger network to $174 per month. The same multi-display approach extends to executive KPI dashboards.
What hardware do you need for an OEE board?
Industrial-grade 43″ to 65″ panels rated 500 to 1,500 nits handle plant lighting and overhead glare. Mount 6 to 10 feet above floor level. Anti-vibration mounts are required near heavy machinery. The Amazon Signage Stick, $99.99 on Amazon, works in low-vibration zones (offices, breakrooms, supervisor areas). Ruggedized industrial media players at $400 to $800 are appropriate for harsh shop-floor environments. The same hardware applies to digital andon boards and shift handover screens.
