Digital Safety Signage for Manufacturing

Which OSHA standards apply to screens, what shop-floor safety content works, how alert overrides run, and how screens tie into EHS software.

Digital safety signage in manufacturing supplements OSHA-required physical hazard markings (lockout/tagout labels, chemical labels) with dynamic content: rotating safety reminders, days-without-incident counters, PPE requirements by zone, and full-screen emergency alert overrides started through the CastHub Emergency Alert REST API. Compliance follows 29 CFR 1910.145 color coding (red=danger, orange=warning, yellow=caution, green=safety, blue=info) with text legible from 5 feet minimum.

An EHS or plant safety team can use entrance, breakroom, and zone-entry screens to push days-without-incident counters, PPE-by-zone reminders, OSHA color-coded hazard alerts, rotating toolbox-talk content, and full-screen emergency overrides started through the CastHub Emergency Alert REST API, supplementing required physical OSHA markings and replacing the paper bulletin board that nobody reads.

Does digital signage replace OSHA-required signs?

No. Digital signage in manufacturing supplements OSHA-required physical signs but does not replace them. Lockout/tagout labels, chemical hazard labels, evacuation maps, and exit markers must remain as permanent physical signage. Use digital signage for dynamic content: days-without-incident counters, PPE reminders by zone, rotating toolbox-talk content, and emergency overrides during incidents. The two layers work together, not as substitutes for each other.

What OSHA standards apply to digital signage?

29 CFR 1910.145 governs accident prevention signs and tags: color coding (red=danger, orange=warning, yellow=caution, green=safety, blue=info), contrast ratios, and legibility from 5 feet minimum. 29 CFR 1910.38 requires emergency action plan communication; digital signage can serve as primary display for evacuation routes if content stays current and accurate. Specific industries (food processing, pharma, chemical) layer additional standards on top of 1910.145.

OSHA colorMeaningRequired application
RedDanger / immediate hazardFire equipment, danger signs
OrangeWarning / serious hazardMachinery hazard, energized equipment
YellowCautionTrip hazards, slow-moving equipment
GreenSafety / first aidFirst aid kits, emergency eyewash
BlueInformation / no immediate hazardInformational notices

What is a days-without-incident counter?

A days-without-incident counter is a live count of days since the last recordable incident, displayed prominently in entrances, breakrooms, and zone entries. The counter is maintained as a slide the safety team updates, or as a web page slide pointing at a dashboard the EHS platform already publishes at a public URL. CastHub documents no VelocityEHS, ProcessMAP or Cority connector, so the reset is a manual step on the slide. Resetting to zero on a recordable maintains transparency rather than hiding it; teams that hide resets see the same incident pattern repeat instead of correcting the root cause.

How does emergency alert override work?

CastHub publishes an inbound Emergency Alert REST API, authenticated with a userEmail and an integrationKey generated under Settings then Integrations, that a mass-notification platform such as Everbridge or AlertMedia can call to start or stop an override by device group, by group name, or across every screen. CastHub does not subscribe to Everbridge or AlertMedia events. On trigger, every screen across the facility instantly switches to the emergency layout: evacuation route, lockdown instructions, weather warning, or chemical release map. A central control point operates the override; individual zone overrides handle localized incidents without disrupting the whole plant. The same alert pattern handles campus emergency alerts at universities and school systems.

What does shop-floor safety signage typically display?

A days-without-incident counter, current PPE requirements for that zone, rotating safety reminders (toolbox talks), recent near-miss data without naming individuals, and training deadline reminders. Content rotates on a 30 to 90 second cycle. The screen is supplementary to required physical signs, not replacing them. Combine the safety layer with OEE production dashboards on dedicated zones rather than mixing both on a single screen.

Can digital safety signage integrate with EHS software?

Not through a connector. CastHub documents no VelocityEHS, ProcessMAP or Cority integration. Where one of those platforms publishes a dashboard at a public URL, CastHub shows it as a web page slide, and otherwise the safety team maintains the counter and the compliance numbers as slides on a schedule. Put only anonymized totals on a screen and keep individual records in the EHS system. Combining EHS with digital andon boards cross-references safety incidents with line stoppage data for kaizen review.
