Digital Shift Handover Boards for Manufacturing
Why paper handover logs fail, how a board shows the summary your MES or CMMS publishes, the hardware to use, and where ISO 9001 fits.
Digital shift handover boards display end-of-shift summary data on workstation or supervisor-area screens: units completed against target, open maintenance work orders, downtime events, priority items flagged for the incoming shift. CastHub shows that summary as a web page slide pointing at the dashboard the MES or CMMS already publishes at a public URL, or as an image slide exported on a schedule; no direct MES or CMMS connection is documented. Outgoing supervisors annotate the published dashboard with manual notes on a slide. The structured handover replaces verbal pass-downs and illegible whiteboard logs that lose information between shifts.
An incoming shift supervisor or production team can read the end-of-shift handover screen to see units produced vs target, open Fiix work orders, downtime reason codes, machine status, and outgoing-supervisor notes gathered into one published dashboard that CastHub displays as a web page slide, replacing whiteboard scribbles and the verbal-only handover that loses information every 8 hours.
What does a digital shift handover board show?
A digital shift handover board on each supervisor or workstation screen shows units completed against target, current OEE, open Fiix work orders, downtime events with reason codes, and priority items the incoming shift should know first. It is one of the highest-leverage manufacturing digital signage use cases. The outgoing supervisor adds manual notes for context the data does not capture: customer escalations, quality concerns, equipment quirks observed during the shift.
| Handover element | Source system | How CastHub displays it |
|---|---|---|
| Units produced | MES | Web page slide on the published dashboard |
| Open work orders | Fiix CMMS | Web page slide on the published work order view |
| Downtime events | MES or SCADA | Web page slide, or a scheduled image slide export |
| Quality issues | Manual and MES | Image slide the quality lead maintains |
| Outgoing notes | Manual | Slide the supervisor updates before handoff |
How does a shift handover board pull from MES and CMMS?
It does not query them. CastHub displays what the MES (Plex, SAP Digital Manufacturing, Tulip) or the CMMS (Fiix, IBM Maximo, eMaint) already publishes: point a web page slide at the handover dashboard public URL with no login, or export that view on a schedule and show it as an image slide. The manual notes block is a slide the outgoing supervisor updates before handoff. No direct MES or CMMS connection is documented.
Why replace whiteboard handover with digital?
Whiteboard notes are illegible, get erased, and do not survive across multiple handovers. Verbal handovers lose information at every transition; the third shift hears a degraded version of what the first shift logged. A published handover board persists the data, time-stamps every entry in the system that generates it, and puts the detail the previous shift may not have noticed on the screen: downtime events, work order status changes, quality flags. The structured handover ports cleanly into executive KPI dashboards at the plant-manager level.
What hardware do shift handover boards use?
55″ to 65″ displays in supervisor stations and dedicated handover zones. Touchscreen displays support annotation: the incoming supervisor marks items reviewed, adds questions, or escalates to the plant manager. Standard commercial displays at $500 to $1,200 are sufficient for view-only handover. Touchscreens at $1,500 to $2,500 add the annotation capability. Run on the Amazon Signage Stick, $99.99 on Amazon, or, for harsh environments, an industrial player at $400 to $800.
How does this fit ISO 9001 quality management?
ISO 9001 requires documented evidence of quality controls and continuous improvement. Time-stamped digital handovers create the documented evidence of shift transitions, open issues, and resolution paths that the standard asks for, held in whatever system generates the handover record. CastHub displays that record and does not ship audit logging, so the system of record stays where it is. Combining handover data with OEE production board data and andon alert history creates a continuous record of production performance against target.
